Yellowstone expanded with Dutton Ranch but is the spinoff filmed in the same location?
The original series, which premiered in 2018, introduced viewers to the fictional Dutton family, who own the largest ranch in Montana. As the fictional universe grew, so did the amount of shows filmed at the ranch, which in real life is known as Chief Joseph Ranch.
The working cattle ranch in Montana has opened to guests after finding fame on Yellowstone. There were also certain scenes for Yellowstone’s spinoff 1883 that took place at Montana’s Yellowstone Film Ranch, which features a Western town with 26 structures.
Sheridan, for his part, owns several pieces of land, including Texas’ Bosque Ranch, which is a personal ranch that now hosts film and TV shoots, concerts and special events. He quietly purchased the legendary Four Sixes Ranch in Texas in 2021. It is set to serve as the backdrop for the now-delayed 6666 spinoff which will follow Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White) during his time working at the ranch.
As for Dutton Ranch, production of the series took place in Ferris, Texas. The Paramount+ series quickly found success and was renewed before season 1 came to an end in July 2026.
“We haven’t heard [about there being] five [seasons]. I think we’re taking it one season at a time,” lead Kelly Reilly told The Hollywood Reporter in July about the spinoff’s future, before her costar Cole Hauser noted, “This has been a beast. We haven’t had any time to even think about it either. We literally filmed [until] the end of March and we’ve been on the road selling the show.”
Reilly hinted there might be a story line in place — at least for season 2.
“I think we have some ideas about season 2, with where we left season 1,” she shared. “We can’t talk about the ending, but we’re super excited about where it goes and so we already know sort of where the beginning is and that’s exciting.”
During the season 1 finale, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) found out she is pregnant and Carter (Finn Little) is probably the father. The finale didn’t have enough time to clarify the paternity, however, because Oreana’s dad, Rob-Will (Jai Courtney), was shot and killed by his brother, Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba), before she could leave town. Carter, meanwhile, was kidnapped as revenge against his parents, Beth (Reilly) and Rip (Hauser).
Season 2 is expected to look a bit different after Us confirmed that Chad Feehan will not return as showrunner. Puck News previously reported that Feehan stepped away from Dutton Ranch after alleged friction with series stars Hauser and Reilly, among others.
“Showrunners change all the time,” Hauser told The Hollywood Reporter. “This business is about adapting.”

He continued: “We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on.”
Reilly had a similar outlook about the shakeup. “It was a really difficult but really satisfying show to make,” she said. “And so was Yellowstone.”
